i have a 1979 f-250 supercab. 460/c-6.. what i am wanting to do it, take that c-6 out and replace it with something that has overdrive.. is this possible? is it a major effort? a lot of money? i have looked at the over/under drive units, and feel like that is a load of money to be spending.
and i guess i should mention that i would like to keep it automatic.
any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

Major effort and lots of money. You can put in an E4OD, but you'll need a standalone controller for it, and it needs to know the vehicle speed somehow. Search for baumann engineering on the Internet and you can read more about it there.
If you really want overdrive, swap in a ZF 5 speed from a 1988 to 1997 F-series with a 460.

gear vendors over/under drive is too much..i think it was like 1500-2000 for the unit.. i didnt pay but 800 for the truck. i'm just going to be mainly up and down the highway with it..i realize that a 460 with a 4barrel isnt exactly an economy truck.. but i would rather have od than no power...
Major Money is right! I have a 460/C-6 combo in my 84 Bronco - I though about it... but after doing the math it was cheaper to just keep the C-6 in it.....
