In my 97 F140 4x4 sc 4.6 auto, I tried pressing the overdrive button but it doesnt seem to work, does anyone know how easy it is to change one of these buttons?
The button itself is easy to replace. Pop the cap off with a small screwdriver and then the switch just pulls out.
A common problem on these is broken wiring near the bottom of the shift lever. You have to remove the steering column covers to see it.
Usually those are the only times.
If you're in hilly terrain and it wants to keep shifting in and out of OD then you should press the button to keep it from doing that.
Sweet man thanks, I will have to try that, not that i never tow or haul anything, but I did read a post on here not too long ago that the guy said he had been getting better mileage in town with the overdrive off, so I would like to try that!

I have the same problem. I believe that the wire is broken and shorts out that cause fuse # 30 to blow, i think its a 5 amp. I was wondering if you replaced yours with a new one or just re-wired it. I asked the dealership and they said its a $200 part. too much for me.
