Within about 1-2 seconds after comming to a stop I can hear and feel a slight "thump" that seems to be comming from the rear of the van. This is the second van I have owned and the first one did the same thing.I just figured it was something with the auto trans, but this one I have now is a manual trans. The first aero was a 86 and this one is a 89. Doesn't seem to be hurting anything, just wondering what it is and if anybody else has experianced this.
Check motor mounts and the rear anti-sway bar bushing. The rear bushing is a large looking A-Frame that mounts to the upper body. When it wears out it makes that noise. You can't buy the bushing, It's sold as a whole unit.
Have you been using your parking brakes lately? I believe there was a thread here not too long ago about a thunk like that, which was the results of the parking brake seizing up. When that happens, the brake shoes would not seat properly against the anchor pin, causing a thunk against it when you apply the brake.
The noise only happens 1-2 seconds after I've come to a complete stop whether I'm still on the breaks or not, doesn't seem to make any differance The brakes are very clean and all pivot points are lubed with high temp anti-sieze. The engine and trans mounts are in good shape and I very rarely use the parking brake, "my driveway and where I park at work are flat level ground" so I just leave it in first gear. I'll take a look at the sway bar bushings to see what kind of shape there in. The noise sounds and feels like someone just walked up behind the van and gave the back bumper a little kick with there foot. I thought maybe the back seats could maybe be making the noise so I removed both back seats but the sound was still there.
Thanks for the information, I'll keep looking for it and if I find it I will let you know what it is.
