I visited this topic quite awhile ago so bear with me. On my '91 Aero E4WD I have been getting the dreaded trans KAWHAMM/KLUNK. First I did a complete flush and new filter to no avail. Pulled the codes and had one, Momentary Loss of PIP signal. Pulled the crank sensor which was oil soaked and dirty. Cleaned it and tested it, seemed okay. Still did it. Put in a new sensor was good for a couple of days then KAWHAMM again. BUT it mostly does it when its warm to hot outside and it has to work against a wind and/or pulling a moderate or more hill. On cold days it does it never to a couple of minor times. So I'm hoping someone has run into this before and can help. Right now I've got a broken ankle and no garage so it'll be a month or so before I can even crawl under or in the van to try to find it.
Oh and it never drops voltage on the meter when this happens so it isn't losing battery power.
Try disconnecting the 4WD module under the driver's seat and see if it still does that. Also, the KAWHAM going uphill is a classic symptom of a dirty gas filter or loss of fuel pressure. I don't think it's related to your tranny.
I had two cars that did that when I go uphill or have a heavy load. Turned out to be a dirty gas filter both times. On one of them, I actually got stranded in Gallup on the way to Santa Fe from California. Not a good thing Strange thing is that the cars idle very smoothly with no problem driving around town. Only happens when you need it most
the 3.0, and the 4.0 both. everywhere i called, even aamco said it was "normal" my buddy has a aero, and his did it too. but all of our only did it at freeway speeds, like when you givie it a little gas, but not enough to make it drop out of overdrive. or if you hit the accellerate button on the cruiis control. the engine would buck like crazy..
well, long story short, the van started running crappy when it got cold, and I took it in and got the plugs and wires changed, as one was arc jumping to another cylinder.
no more buck and or kawham! turns out, i called my buddy, and he had recently had his plugs n wires changed too, and it went away on his too.
so, now i know. its the plugs, and or the wires. I had autolite double platinums put in.
New plugs and wires last summer. New fuel filter too. Awhile after that it started doing it. When I pulled the codes I got the one for Monentary Loss of PIP signal. I will try the 4WD module. I am also going to try to trace back the wires to find the EDIS unit. But it'll be a while before I can do anything. I hate being broken.
