I'm pretty much a novice in this area, but I have an '87 F150, 4.9L/4 speed manual transmission. While I drive the truck I notice that, if the speed varies quickly (as if I push the gas lightly, then let off, push the gas lightly.....so on) that when I step on the gas..AND when I let off the gas....I get one distinct "clunk" under the truck. No bounce...no rattle....just a clunk.....one when I ease on to the gas...and another when I let off.
Could this be worn out bushings on the radius arm or is there something else that I might be missing?
I'd appreciate any information that anyone might be able to supply!
It could be radius arm bushings, mine are worn out and do exactly that when I'm in 4x4. A clunk/pop when you hit a bump is another sign of bad radius arm bushings.
Bob, I just repaired a similar problem on my truck. If the clunk only happens when pushing down or lifting up on the gas pedal, then I suggest checking the transmission mount. I had the bolts completely missing. I had to replace the bolts. I used lock washers and some lock-tite on the threads. Good luck.
