tranny help!

tranny help!
my buddy has an 88 f-150 4wd 5.0 automatic. it goes into gear fine, but sometimes gets hung up in 2nd gear and wont shift to third, im not exactly sure what type of tranny he has, code is "T" on the vin, and the door placard, any info on either of these would be great!
