Carb and fuel tank problem
I have a 78 f100 with a 302 and 3 speed manual tranny. I have several problems. First, The truck intermittently does not want to start despite the engine being warm. Happens more frequently after sitting for 10-15 minutes. Sometimes it will start with little power. I should let you know that there is a new carb in the truck and the problems were not there before. Can somebody help me define what is going on? I've noticed that the truck will diesel sometimes after I have been running it for a while.
Secondly, I ahve a gas leak from the gas tank. It seems to leak until the tank is around 1/2 full, then it stops. I'm suspecting that the O-ring on the sender is shot. Is this a good place to start? When I checked there seemed to be dripping coming off the wire going to the sender unit.
Thanks.
Still, the fuel tank is probably to blame for several reasons.
Has your truck been sitting with gas in it? If so, a layer of varnish may have collected in your tank. (I had that problem.)
If so, did you run your truck close to empty? (If the varnish in the bottom of the tank entered the fuel lines, it may have clogged your carb, gotten your float stuck, etc.)
Also, new carbs are rarely pre-tuned to your engine. Your fuel mixture may be wrong, or possibly your idle speed.
Next is your fuel pump. If it's an old pump, I'd advise you to buy a new one. They aren't very expensive, and can make a HUGE difference on your engine.
Finally, try changing the filter. It's another cheap, simple fix. Filters may be a small, cheap part, but they can cause an entire engine to give up the ghost if they're clogged.
I hope this helps you. (I have a '78 F-100, but it's a parts truck for my '150. It didn't have a motor, but you can't go wrong for $100, right?)
