I am looking at a 1986 F-150 4x4 with either a 289 or a 302 in it. The truck origionaly had a 300-6 in it. The dealer said that the truck needed a new harmonic balancer. How tough is it to replce one of these? Will it hurt to drive the truck home without fixing it? I live about 1.5 miles from the dealership. Thanks for all your help.
unless this truck is a real great price, i would not buy it. if he can't tell you if it is a 302 or 289, i would worry about the problem being diagnosed by him as a harmonic balancer!
some problems start out simply enough, but grow in complexity.
Is the rest of the truck in good condition? If it looks to be in good condition, I'd consider it. My balancer needed replaced last year, only cost me around $120 to have it done.
Hey, thanks for the fast info. The truck looks fairly good, one fender has been repainted and engine runs rough, has a 4 speed manual. It's for sale at this little redneck used car lot in town. The trucks there are not known for their uumm... mechanical soundness. Most people who buy vehicles from this car lot use it to run in and out of the river with. He aquired this truck from an auction in Savannah GA, so lord knows where it origionally came from or who did the engine swap. He wants $2600 for it...i think i'll pass on it for now.
