302 HO hard warm start

i have an 84 F-150 4x4 with a 302 HO. When the truck is cold, it starts up fine, but while warm it cranks over very slow, like the battery is going dead. What could be causeing this? Thanks

Hi, it is probably your starter going bad they take alot of heat from the exhaust and sometimes the armature swells with the heat and then it won't turn over or turns slow. John

Also, I forgot to mention that the truck has headers on it. Would adding a heat shield to the starter help the problem?

Hi, it would probably help but if it is going it will eventually die anyway. But try the heat shied first you can make one out of sheet aluminum just leave an air space in between the starter and shield. John

I agree. The starter is getting too much heat. I have seen the original heat sheilds break down after time fall off of the starter solinoid. When this happens, the starter doesn't work to full capacity due to the heat it is receiving from the exhaust. Headers make it even hotter. A heat sheild should do the trick. Good luck.
