I currently have 126,000 mi on my 95 F-150 4X2 and was wondering if I should change my U-joints before I take my long trip that is planned for vacation. They are original set and aren't making any noises yet. I wonder how long they normally last? Years ago it seems like I changed them more often on my vehicles than I do now.
I think my truck may have made it a good distance, too, with the originals if I had not slightly over loaded it one day. Overloading causes the U-joints and drive shaft to spin at a different angle than they are used to, and it only took about 15 miles for my rear one to chew itself to death.
Upon considering a long trip with originals, I would ask myself if I think I am going to load the bed substantially more than it normally rides and, if so, I would change them out. If the trip is at the rear's normal ride height you will probably make it OK.
Also, I'd order mine from broncograveyard.com. They give you the good Spicer U-joints with the grease fittings in them. Then make sure you grease them every other oil change or so.
I will be hauling my Harley Road King which weighs around 800lbs and pulling a 16ft alum bass boat, so the driveshaft will probably be at a different angle for about 1500mi roundtrip.
