I just bought another 1990 ranger 4x4 5 speed manual 2.3 L. All the gears work fine except overdrive and reverse. I can get reverse to work a little bit if i hold the shifter down. I can't get the shifter to go into od at all. Do i have to pull the tranny to fix this or what? any ideas on what is might be?
I assume the shift mechanism is built into the tranny, and therefore you're gonna have to pull the tranny and inspect. It's hard for me to say without actually feeling it, but I have to wonder if it's got bent shift fork(s) or fried syncros on 5th.
When shifting, syncros in the transmission cause gear speeds to match ("syncronize") just prior to engagement so you don't get the grinding/crunching. But if they are worn/broken due to abuse or other, it's possible that you may not be able to shift into that gear or will have difficulty shifting that gear. Reverse is not syncronized, that's why that gear grinds a bit sometimes under the right conditions (such as vehicle moving and attempting to shift into reverse).

I am no transmission expert but have had some experience changing out these things. Check in the archives and see if you have a MD05 (Mazda) trans or a Mitsubishi. Both wear out long before the motor will. Both are expensive to rebuild which I
decuded not to attmpt to do at home . Since I know the Mazda should use A/T fluid, any kind of leak, slow or fast will kill that tranny, I was 200 miles from home when I discovered that one. I hear that most 4X4 Ranger trannies of that era were Mitsubishis and they die like kamakazies, a junkyard tranny is a gamble but seem more plentiful than the Mazda. When you find out what youve got, let us know.
It said AOD on the side. There is a sticker that had a model number or somthing i remember. I'll check and get those numbers. I took the tranny out and realized the forks & shifter works but there is a lever that controls the reverse and OD that will not move back and forth. I took a transmission out of a 2wd ranger that was the same year but the spline shaft was 2 1/2 inches too long to fit into the transfer case. isn't a 2wd and a 4wd tranny the same except for the transfer case?
