4R70W Transmission

Hi there,

Do these transmissions have a seperate computer module to control them? Does anyone know of a site in which I could purchase one online? Because I live so far away I can only purchase online.

thank you all :->

The transmission controls are built into the PCM (Powertrain Control Module) which is the computer that runs the engine as well.
These don't go bad very often.
What sort of problem are you having?

Thanks Racerguy,

I'm just collecting all the things I need to transplant my 1998 existing 4.0L Expl 4x4 with a 5.0L expl motor and 4r70w transmission. This transmission was out of a 4x2. So would the tail of the 4r70w unbolt and could i bolt up my existing 4x4 transfer case to that tail without any hassle? Do i need any other bits to do this do you know?

I'm quite envious of you all in the US, you have so many choices for accessories and the like. In NZ we didnt start putting v8s into Explr at factory level until 2001. But I managed to an Ex-USA imported engine here.

Thanks again for your kindly advice.

Sounds like a fun project that would probably be a lot easier if you had easy access to parts. I guess that would take some of the challenge out of it though
The output shaft is different between a 4x2 and 4x4 transmission so unfortunately you're going to have to replace the shaft or find another transmission
If you were able to find a wrecked V8 Explorer to use as a parts donor that would be the easiest way to go.

Mmmmmm the plot thickens. Im sure there was somewhere that sold a bolt on drive shaft to turn from 4x2 to 4x4. Does anyone know of such a place?

I have called and emailed many automotive dismantlers in New Zealand, and guess what, no one is wrecking a v8 Explr.

So would my existing drive shaft click into the rear of this 4x2 4r70w? I suppose I could live with a 4x2 for a little while.

Cheers.
