My '93 f250 7.3l has me stumped, I sure would appreciate some other thoughts!
If my Truck sits for 3 or 4 hrs I need to turn on the key ,cycle the glow plugs and turn it over, then let it sit a few min and turn it over again, it will then give a puff of white smoke and fire right off. If it has sat only a short time just need to crank it over once and it fires right off. I have replaced the glow plugs and had the controler checked and all that is good,
there is 136000mi on the engine, dosent use any antifreeze or oil and runs perfect except for this starting problem.
Any Ideas??
Are the injector fuel return lines originals, probably grey in color. There are numerous air leaks possible in the filter head system too....read some info on the filter....
do the glow plugs cycle properly? I had a problem with my 88 ... the glow plugs came on and went off quickly with no afterglow (clicking). What I found out was that one of the power lugs on the controller had corrosion on it and not allowing the power to flow thru. Also, if you can, try parking the truck with the nose down hill, this will keep any fuel from returning to the tank. If this helps, you probably have air entry into the system. This may happen even tho there is no fuel showing while running. Look around the return caps and lines and also at the lift pump for signs of fuel leaking. Dont crank on the starter too long, sensitive to overwork and heat. Also want to make sure the batteries are up. If you have 130k on the engine and no return service, you should prob replace the return system components. Hope this helps.
thanks for the help I will be looking in the morning and checking out your sugestions also plc.3 thanks for directing me to that website there is a lot of usefull info there
i've had the white smoke and its always been one or two glow plugs not working, white smoke is unburned diesel by the non firing cylinder when the engine first fires up..salud soximan
I had the same problem and it turned out to be a bad starter. It just would not turn the engine fast enough. Put in a new starter and WOW!!!!!! What a difference that made. It starts up so fast now and the starter turns over 3 times as fast as before. Just my experience.

Reason: missspelling
how does it start after you have run it for a while? sounds like it is time for an injector pump. the db2 pump may not be kicking up the enrichment from a worn head and rotor. this is a common problem with the 91 and on pumps with around 155k and up. get ready though. if the rotor and head are bad, you are looking at a 850-1150 rebuild. hate to say this, but there is very little option on it. guess you could install an 88 unit, if you have the injectors to go with it...
