Got my 4.30's!!!!

I love them. Since I blew out my rearend and had to replace the case and all I decided it would be a good time to go from 3.73's to 4.30's.

It did not affect the mileage good or bad and it only raised the 70mph rpm by 300rpm.

Can't wait to pull the trailer with it I have a feeling I may see a slight increase in the mileage with a loaded trailer compared to the 3.73's.

Just thought I would let you all know incase somebody else was thinking about lower gears.

Brian,
I have installed 4.30's in several 6.0 trucks, (including my own) with tires in the 35" (315) to 38" range. I think it is definitely the way to go. You will love the way it tows.

have a great day!

Tim

I too have 4.30's with 35" tires and love improved bottom end and better driveability.

Where do you guys get your 4.30? From the dealer? What does it cost? I assume that you need to do the front too since all of you have 4wd.

I would also like to know the answer to the questions posted above. I just bought an 8" lift and am probably putting 38x15.5x18's on. Wondering if i need change gears. It's a diesel and i never ever tow or haul anything. Do I still need them?

I just had 4.30s installed too with my 315/75/16s and 4" lift. It makes city/highway driving much better. The gears didn't change my already bad mileage due to the 35s. However, towing up any long grade or hilly terrain still totally, TOTALLY sucks. The 4.30s and 35s only give you like a 3.92:1 ratio which *is* closer to 4.10s but not enough to give you WOW. My V10, can't drive up any grade in 3rd gear. It goes a couple of hundred feet, drops to 2nd until it gets to a higher RPM (if it can), then drops back to 3rd... then drops about 500rpm lower (yes, OD is off), then I hit the gass and it goes back into 2nd. Forget 3rd and manually drop it to 2nd. Then it wines at 4000RPM and I'm doing 50.

My TT dry weight is 5600lbs and loaded with gear and with water is about 6500lbs.

I'm seriously thinking about going all the way back down to 265/75/16s so I CAN tow.

BTW... it costs about $1500 for front and back. Fronts are DANA 60s and the rears are Ford 10.5

Mike

I had mine done at the local shop, can't tell you exact price cause I had a whole (like entire) brand new rearend put in (I cracked my case). Love the gears, never had a problem towing before (19,500 pounds trailer weight) so I imagine it will be even better now. My is a 6.0 PSD.

BTW some V-10's come with 4.30's stock so I would have gone with 4.88's or maybe 5.13's with a gasser.

Do you drive off-road? You may like 4.30's or even 4.88's with that tire size.

Edit: What body style is your truck? I assume you have a mid 90's body style with a 7.3psd?

Getting mine done at West Coast Differentials in Northern California Sacramento area. Cost = $1,400 approximately is what I was told for all gears front and rear. My SDY was very, very, very sluggish off the line and it still is after Hypertech (but much better than it was). I also have flowmaster and FIPK installed. Hopefully, the 4.30 gears will get some off the line torque back. Next mod: headers! Then, supercharger!

Are you running any kind of chip or tuner? That tire size and stock program might feel kind of ******* with stock gears.

I went right to 36's and then 37's on my v10 and it killed it with the 3.73's. I've since learned to live with it though. Gears are last on the list of things to do, but when I do, 4.88's here I come!
