Question Going from lights to gauges.

I have a 69 f100, it has lights in the instrument cluster and I want to replace it with one from a 71 or 72 (not sure which one) F-250 that has all gauges. I searched the forum and read that the clusters were different from 67-69 and 70-72. Does this mean they are not interchangeable at all? Or will they still interchange? Thanks!

yes you can inter-change 67-69 and 70-72 i have a 70 and wanted a different speedo so i went to a salvage yard and found a cherry gauge cluster out of a 69 the differance is in 67-69 the gauges all had individual wires and in 70-72 they started using a printed circuit (that was not one of fords better ideas) so all you have to do is when you get the gauge pod make sure that you clip the wiring harness end off and then clip the one off of your pickup and strip the wires and solder the new one on to your harness and plug it into the gauge pod. OR you can take the printed circuit off of the 70-72 and replace it with the individual wires off of the 67-69 cluster and put them on and go <- (this is what i would do).

My 69 F100 "CONTRACTORS SPECIAL" has all of the factory O.E. gauges in the instument cluster.
They all are in functioning order.

I was going to change to gauges on my '70. I found a cluster out of a '72 in good shape and was when I tried to install the plug was different in the back from lights to gauges. so I just put aftermarket gauges in. I found out the gauges are not really that accurate anyway. I am happy with the gauge cluster I put in, they are small and out of the way.

I took mine apart and found my wire connections to be different also, but I think all I have to do is cut the old end off and each wire to the the two posts on the back of the gauge. Am I right by thinking that way, since the sending unit reads resistance and that resistance will be transfered to gauge?

Thanks!
