Dead Steering Wheel Buttons

My intelligent son borrowed my 92 Aerostar and spilled cappuccino on the steering wheel. Now I have it back and the horn and cruise don't work (fuses are OK). Ideas before I tear the wheel apart?

Try using water and a toothbrush around the button edges before tearing it apart. My son did the same thing with pop. It just caused the buttons to stick to their housing. I had to repeat this two or three times but eventually all the buttons worked again. If you have a compressor to blow dry the buttons, it speeds up the process considerably.

If cleaning between the outside button covers doesn't work like previosly suggested try and see if you can pop the buttons off the switch heads and access the switch underneath I'm sure there will be alot of sticky liquid under there that you can't get to with the button cover on.

However the buttons may be clipped on top of the switch from underneath at the back of the steering wheel which may require taking the wheel apart.

Be sure to also be prepared if you saturate the switch in anything be sure to disconnect the battery or the Horn Relay you don't want the horn going off because theres water in the switch .

baware!! if the buttons on the steering column are old they have a big tendency to break!! (like mine) then they just fall out of the holes any ol time to be lost on the floor etc. i never have found replacements. so i'd go with the less invasive measures first!! rick

I just use Rubbing Alcohol. It drys without leaving residue & will clean most anything sticky on buttons.

Pour a little on the buttons and press them a few times to make sure they're loose, Then wipe clean.
