Hello. I am just starting to 'test the water' in with the big toys. Went to the dealer and test drove an f-250 6.0 xc short bed. Short truck no doubt... My question is, would an F-350 CC 6.0 long bed dually 4x4 be able to spin the tires? Powerbraking help burning out, or is she too heavy? The F-250 could roast 'em all day long no doubt. Love the diesel...Am I going to doubt going from an expedition and ranger to an F-250 shortbox XC, or '350 crew cab king ranch long bed dually? Will the dually keep up with the ranger 4l? REason I ask is, I don't want another slow vehicle. Been there done that, and the ranger is my fastest. Anyone with 0-60 times? thanks in advance
I had a 2002, crew cab, 4X2, Dually, V-10, 4:30 rear end. I could chirp the tires, but never tried to smoke them. The V-10 Dually comes with higher gears, so it's easer to spin the tires, on say a simailar SRW truck with 3:73 grears. What a dually, has going against it, is four tires to spin. More grip, plus the rear end on a Dually is a Dana 80, which would be a little more heaver than the Viston rear end on a F250/F350 SRW. My new 2004, crew cab, 4X4, Dually, PSD, 4:10 rear end can chirp the tires too, but have not tried to smoke them. I'm sure it could!
they don't loose grip on straight out pedal through the firewall situations though do they? If you tried to I bet you could get the tires to heat up good...How about straight line acceleration...'bout how many second you think it takes to hit 60??
What the heck would you want to buy a truck like that for and worry if it would smoke the tires?? I hope that and "Is it fast?" aren't your only criteria. You must be young and dumb and haven't bought new tires yet (especially the 19's or whatever they are on the new dually) or old and rich. Sorry, I just don't see the point of dropping that kind of $$$$$$$ on a truck then just pounding on it.
fwiw...
my dads business has a 03 350 cc dully 6.0psd auto with 4.10's. When they first got it thats actually the first thing i did...took it around and powerbraked it. It will not only spin em but downright boils them. Feels like it gets into 3rd gear. its pretty sweet when you can leave 4 strips as long as you want. My v10 with 35's will on ly burn em goin round a corner.
I don't think you'll have any trouble with any ranger 4l. or much else for that matter. If it won't do what you're asking here then it's already broke. I have more trouble keeping mine hooked up than breaking it loose. Plus there are little tricks that really light up a 6.0----SCT, Predator, Edge, SCMT---just to name a few. I'd worry more about the Firebirds and Camaro's than any ranger........

I'm sorry, but I don't believe anyone has the right to say things like that. Very disrespectful. YES as a matter of fact I have gone through a set of tires. I want to buy a truck not only for just towing, but also be able to stretch it's legs every once in a while. "Sorry, I just don't see the point of dropping that kind of $$$$$$$ on a truck then just pounding on it..." Is it YOUR money?? I don't want to start anything, but where did I say I was going to 'pound' on it. I can't have fun with my vehicles every once in a while?!?! To every man his own. Don't want to start anything...Just a simple quesiton. Thanks
First, you are quite right, marcs724 had no call to attack in such a fashion, it is your choice in what you do to your vehicles.
That being said, there are quite a few here who drag race their trucks... Yes, you heard correctly, they actually drag race them! So if you are concerned that these trucks can't get out of their own way let me tell you that is not an issue. If you do a search on this forum you should find the times you are looking for, in fact I know that people have posted 1/4 mile times.
You can add everything from a tuner to propane to get more giddyup neck snapping starts it is up to you, either way have fun!

I will not tolerate this type of language in FTE.....read the Guidelines, follow them or move on!
I've tried a couple of times to spin the tires on dry pavement in my '04 6.0 CC LWB FX4 dually and have yet to do it. However, I'm one of the few I know that owns a 6.0 that doesn't run a programmer or any other engine mods. Now if I get the tires spinning BEFORE I hit the pavement, they'll spin until I let up. I also run BFG M/T's which grip dry pavement like an ex-wife on your money. You put any type of performance program in these things and I have no doubt that the tires will spin. I'm no expert on 4 liter Rangers (I'm assuming stock), but I'd be willing to guess that even my bone stock 6.0 would have no problems stomping on it. Until I hit that 99mph mark that is. Now, to be completely childish. Nothing beats the look on the face of that yuppie who thought he was going to beat you off the line in his Beemer to get in front you, and see's nothing but the tail lights of your 8000lb brick go flying away.
I see a guy in a company Ranger every morning going to work. He pulled up beside me in a double turn lane at a stoplight. It turned green, and he nailed it. I caught him and stomped on my brake to slow down to keep beside him until he quit. I knew it was a 4.0 by the way it ran. 6.0 is way more truck, even stock.
I have a '98 4.0 Ranger and an '05 psd 250. I can not exactly race them since I have yet to install the remote control into the Ranger. I can say a few differences I have noticed between the two:
(Ranger @ 92k miles, F250 @ 2100 miles)
- the 250 rides a LOT nicer then the Ranger
- the visablity in the 250 is 5x better then the ranger
- the ranger gets about 17mpg city, the 250 gets about 15mpg city
- the ranger always had some nice get up and go, I am not a lead foot but the tires would break loose if i wanted them to (poor taction in rain). since I have only had the 250 for 2 months I am still babying it, can't speak much on breaking the tires loose.
- the f250 has a nice .5 - 1.0 second turbo lag when I do step on it that the Ranger does not
- just everyday driving the 250 is 10 times more fun to drive, more creature comforts (this may be in part due to an xlt Ranger vs a Lariet 250)
- the 250 seems to be built a lot better, higher quality materials, then the Ranger
- more people wave at you in a 250 then a Ranger. I have instant friends in parking lots, RV parks, Pep Boys, etc, that I did not have in the Ranger.
All that said, do I think my stock 4.0l Ranger could beat my stock 6.0psd f250?
- 0-60 ... be close but I think the 250 would win
- overall ... the 250 would run 75-80 (maybe higher) all day long and not even break a sweat, the ranger starts showing it's limits on long hauls doing 80+.
haha...that's great... Hmmm, drag race you say?!?! that's quite different... I was just curious on what the trucks could do, because I drove an early build '350 6 and it seemed like it could barely get out of it's own way let alone tow anything. I was very perplexed as to how the later build '250 got up and ran with full steam, whereas the '350 seemed to kinda poke along...thanks for the help...will keep posted on the trucks...may not get one soon though until that time, i think i better get used to other diesel trucks pouncin' on mine...
beat me to the post there!! The range after about 55 or so seems to lose pep trying to pass...kinda just throw it in third and hope for the best...As for build quality...the 250 I drove definately beats the ranger. The view is also great too, and the ride...for some reason no comparison! To me it seems backwards...back when I first learned how to drive, the big trucks drove hard, and the little ones just drove kinda more like cars. How's the turning radius on a 350 long bed CC and 250 short bed XC compare to a ranger?? didn't seem a whole lot different...once again thanks for all the help!
I will tell you right now that the 250 with any chip will smoke the Ranger in every category. Buy the SCT or equivalent and you smoke most modern cars. I dont have the speed limiter anymore thanks to the SCT, it is quite humorous to watch things get smaller in the rearview! If you buy any chip and even in the economy mode it will be very impressive, even compared to a gas truck.
