wireing problem with dash insterments

i was working on my speedo cable that took too long to put in well any way as soon as i got it in my gauges didnt work so i went underneath foud this black wire with red stripe on it and had a connecter on it with no wire so i found a blue wire that has two wire together and hooked it up to it and it workded but at night with i turn my lights in my guages go to 0 or dead any answers going on here?????????????????????????

You should get a wiring diagram for your truck.

What year is it?

I'd unhook that wire! Your gages should receive 12V with the key on through the constant voltage regulator which drops the voltage to the individual gages to about 5 volts. You need to locate a 12 volt ignition switch controled source to connect to the gages. There should be a black ground wire running from the metal back of the cluster cluster to the steering column support. I usually replace this wire with a longer one because it is to short to allow working on the speedo cable and usually gets ripped off anayway.
