Hi guys, I have a78 so I hang out in that forum,However my son has a Dodge(sorry) I have been on their sites (Dodge) with no help at all. They suck!!! He put a new clutch in this weekend and now it is squeeking and making a scraping noise ,When the peddle is pushed. After in gear and moveing , no noise at all. I am a little worryed about it becausw he drives to toledo every week for school. He is running the cummins in it. I hate to see him wreck it, it cost him $2800 with the clutch and a new input shaft. Any help at all would be great. Some of his friends say that is norral for that type of clutch. What do you think.
Could be several things... being that I can't "feel" it with my foot to give a better answer... I'll have to guess.
The pressure plate might not be pushing the clutch hard enough... maybe one or more of the fingers were bent during installation... maybe the throughout bearing is not too happy... maybe the flywheel wasn't resurfaced before installation and has some ruts or grooves...
An occasional squeek is okay with those clutches, but a scraping noise is definately bad news of some kind. The problem is if you don't tear it apart to see what is wrong, the new clutch is going to be a worn out clutch very quickly.
It was installed wih a new flywheel. The pedal seems fine to me. altho I have not been driveing a clutch alot lately. The squeek comes as you push down to shift and the light scrap noise is on the let-up. There is no chater or vibration while you drive. Thanks for your reply Frederic. Looks like I know what I am doing Sat. when he gets home from school.Erv
Let me ask this... are you SURE its the clutch? I haven't owned any recently made dodges, only a 1975 D200 extended cab, which had a mechanical linkage for the clutch. THAT linkage squeeked and squawked because the bearings on the linkage was shot.
Mechanical or Hydraulic? I just throwing ideas out at ya... hoping to save you the hassle of dropping the tranny again.
Ok, I called the guy that sold my son the clutch. He said that this type of clutch makes these sounds and not to worry about it. I also found out it is ceramic so that makes a big difference also. I guess they use them on the big trucks. Said this one would hold up to 800 hp. Wish he would have told my son that. I didn't get a lot of sleep last night. $2800 might not be a lot to him but I was a little worryed, him being at school and using it all week. He says he will make it good for a year. Well thanks for your time frederic. I love this site. I got no response from the Dodge site. I will let you know in a furture post if it is still running. Thanks again. Erv
Ervin how is the clutch holding out? The slave cylinder on some hydraulic clutches will squeak and feel grity when they get old or dirty. Not sure what is installed on your sons truck though.
Hi,It's doing fine. It was just that type of clutch. I guess we will be putting in a new fly wheel before the clutch goes bad. The ceramic blades are what is making the noises. It pulls like a tractor, real strong. The only thing he does not like is it is either in or out. A very hard clutch to feather in for a smooth start. I think he is up to about 800 H.P. now and it is doing fine. The trans. Is ok now that we had it rebuilt to hold 900 H.P. Do not know what to do if he puts more power to it. HA You got to love young boys. I was never like that, I do not know where he gets it from, HA. Erv
