Mysterious vibration

I have a 1997 F150 4x4 extra cab w/ the 4.6 liter engine. I have a vibration in the front end that seems to either be a half shaft or a hub problem. The wheels and tires are of stock size and have been balanced. The vibration is more like a grinding and is on the driver's side and will increase and decrease with speed. The driveline also 'pops' on the driver's side when accelerating in 4 wheel drive. I have done alot of work to the front end of the truck and just want some opinions before I decide to investigate myself or take to the dealer. Any thoughts from the forum?

On front wheel drives cv problems are most noticeable in tight turns (clicking sound).
Only other thought is a wheel bearing. Good luck.

Are the wheel bearings in the hub?
