I am swapping the rear axle assy and need to indentify and interpret the codetag on the differential cover.
The numbers are: Top Row....Sb (could be an 8) 07D
Bottom Row... L55 889 A04 (Might be a 3 under the bolt.
1.Need to determine what type of axle assy (ratio) this is as I am going to start my search tomorrow.
2.Do junkyards normally open the diff. and inspect for broken teeth or wear?
I'd try a search myself in TECH ARTICLES but my back is killing me and I can't sit here for a long time. (thought I'd try for the sympathy vote)
Thank you. Perfect timing. I just got back here.
Is that enough information to go shopping Monday?
I'd still like to know what the rest of the code means if anyone has a link they can send me to, I'd appreciate it.
Yes I have an 89 F150 and now I know it has 355 ratio with limited slip. Got one available and can pick up for $300. This is a complete axle assy inc drums. Now here is where I might have made a mistake. I asked if they would double check the differential to make sure the gears are all intact. (It is off the truck) What am I to do if I get it home, take off the cover and find a chipped gear or missing tooth)??? Haul it all the way back? They guarantee 90 days. Wouldn't it be in their best interest to verify it was in good shape first? Am I being unreasonable? Just curious.
I don't have a problem with opening it myself. I'd rather do it there then find out after I get it home. I'm driving around with a defective spider gear as it is and don't need it to fail before I can replace the axle assy. I guess it's one of those things that can last for a year or go any day, so I am told.
