About an hour ago I checked out a Ranger at the local Toyota dealer. There wasn't a price on the truck and they were closed. What would you say is a fair price for this? Specs are as follows:
2003 Ranger Edge
PW, PD, Tilt, Air
four door
4.0 SOHC engine with a 5-speed manual
17,312 miles
Black w/ charcoal interior
4x4 but not an FX4 or anything like that
NADA guides says roughly $17000 for it. Does that seem kinda high?
kbb.com
nada.com
edmunds.com
local newspaper
car trader weekly pubs
Yes, this does seem high for an edge. But remember, dealer asking price is usually their dream price. If you like the truck, get educated on the price from the sources above (remember, where you live impacts value), go drive, and maybe make an offer. And don't be afraid to offer somewhere down near wholesale + $500 to start. Nobody but they know what they really paid for it. Besides, it's pretty safe to assume they lowballed it at trade in time; it's just part of the game.
On edit: If I hadn't already bought a new one a few weeks ago on ebay (same truck as this listing), and if this listing had an automatic, I'd be after this ebay listing: # 4537939842

I don't know about Boise, but I know in Oregon and Washington, just about any pickups are going at or above wholesale book at the auctions. If it's nice, they probably bought it for near wholesale, plus figure in for detailing, shop inspections, it add's up. An offer of wholesale + 500 is a good place to start, much better than insulting with a 'half off' offer
Make an offer tomorrow, they'll be more willing to deal after a slow easter...
Oh, and make sure they give you a carfax.

A dealer would probably give 11-13k (13 would be really good) for this as a trade-in, which it probably was. A toyota dealer wouldnt buy it at auction. If accurate, 17K would be too high. Bill is right used cars have absurd sticker prices just in case some dope walks in and pays it, so be ready for a shock, they may say they want 17. Whatever it is, ignore it, and offer what you think is fair, and be prepared to walk, they usually come around.
I forgot to mention, but the rebates and any other incentives on new ones impact the value of used ones. Do NOT ignore this. Appraisers know to look for this and factor it into trade in value.
There is something else people should realize about trade ins. Just because you're looking at a new ride and the saleman comes back and says your current rig is worth, say, $10k doesn't mean that's what the appraiser really said. The appraiser may have said $11.5k. The salesman is playing the game; he bumps that $10K up a tad during negotiations and now you're supposed to feel "good", like you got something out of them. On the other hand, maybe they played the ultra low appraisal game on that Edge and they won. This is why I'd begin near wholesale, just to "test the waters" .
Wholesale on that 'lil dude is higher than you think- $14500-15000, although it books for more than that (probably closer to $16 on the wholesale end). Ranger S/C 4X4's are good used merchandise. Good switch rig off of a new one if you're a Ford store. Bet they're asking $18 or $19 for it.
I just ran it thru kbb.com assuming my zip code (99208), alloy wheels, CD player, CC (I think it comes with the tilt wheel), sliding rear window and excellent condition. I'm getting $14,325 for trade in (wholesale). He should add a bit if there's other equipment, like a bed liner or a receiver hitch.
Remember too that the dealer probably did a reno, safety check, and packed it. That's where I came up with my $500 in an earlier post, but I lowballed these three items on purpose .
On edit: Here's food for thought. There is a dealer where I live that recently had (maybe still has) an 03 FX4 Level II. My buddy knows a salesman at the dealership and saw the truck; word on the street is that it can be had for $15k. That's a SUPER GOOD price on that truck.
That same dealer has or had an 04 FX4 Level II. I drove it. His first offer was $18.5K. I'm thinking if I wanted it I could have got it for $17.5K with not much effort at all. Maybe even $17K.
On ebay there is a new 04 FX4 Level II at a dealer that was bid up to about $15,100. It didn't sell. Maybe give him a call and see what you can do. The truck is in Jackson, Wyoming. Not all that far from Boise.

Maybe in Oregon. Before I bought my Explorer, I considered a new 2003 FX4 Level II 5 speed. The dealer offered it to me for 19K and change, no trade involved.
Yep- a new '05 can be had for a little over $20,000. The key to resale in a Ranger is S/C 4X4. If that was a 2WD reg cab, you'd be lucky to pull $5000 out of it.
