Ok guys, help me out. I have a 93 ford escort with the 1.9L engine. It started dieing the other day at random times and the check engine light came on. I had a shop pull the codes and one was for the MAF senser and one was for an out of range temp senser. I replaced both and now it seems to run ok but as it warms up the idle goes real low (about 500 rpm). I cannot figure out what controls the idle and how to fix it. Any thought or suggestions?
Sorry, I have not worked on Escorts that much, but, if this were a Ford truck and there were no codes then I would suspect the IAC on the side of the throttle body. Especially on a OBDI/EEC-IV system because it has no effective feedback to the CPU.
They load up with grime and such and stop working correctly. If you search the BII/2.9 forums you will find information about how to clean them. Clean it and see if it makes a difference. If it does, then clean the whole throttle body and put a new IAC on (about $50).
I looked this up at Autozone and this would be part #
IDLE AIR CONTROL VALVE
Wells TV212 $42.99
As for the temperature sensor, I just want to point out that on the EEC-IV it will report out of range if the engine is not warmed up enough. This usually means driving it and not just an idle.
Before I replaced any more parts, I would disconnect the battery for a few minutes, then reconnect it, and go for a city and highway cruise (varied speeds) of at least 10 miles and then see how it behaves or the codes that are pulled.
