They're trying to sell more junk, you don't need to replace those bolts. I did put a tiny dab of LocTite on mine on the D60 just to make sure they never came loose but I sure don't think it's necessary.
yea you can reuse them, but make sure you torque them right, and clean the threads and use loktite...i had a problem with shearing them off for awhile when i was being stupid, you gotta loctite em cause they will eventually come loose
You reuse the bolts and put lock washers under the bolt head to keep them tight I never used locktite on them and I have done many of them.
You just want to clean up the hub and axle flange good then seal it with some RTV silicone.
I never had problems with axle shaft bolts coming loose on my dually trucks which seen upto 8000lb loads. The Dana 70 is a tough axle I actually never had any problems with the 70s in my trucks. I would take a 70 over a 10.25 Ford any day. Now that I have gone to F-450s the Dana 80 used in these trucks make the 70 look small
The biggest concern you should have is the axle nuts are good and the lock washer with the tabs are in good shape. The problem with the older Dana 70s is the lockwasher bettween the adjusting and lock nut(Jamb) fails and the nuts back off and the wheel assembly walks off the hub. I had that problem so did dad it does a good job of screwing up the threads on the spindle.
However, the bad news is I have a @%$ing Dana 61 NOT a Dana 70.
I pulled the driver's side axle, and counted 30 splines. Since it has 3.5" axle tubes, I am pretty sure it is a 61. Why ford would do that, I haven't a clue since it has 3.54 gears.
Anyways, I am kinda clueless on how to get the bolt off. It has a tab that points straight up out of the keyway. Do I merely bend both sides of the tab flat against the spindle and back off the nut? And do I need to buy a new lock washer each time I screw with it?
BTW, I thought the F450s had the Dana 135, or is that the 550s??
just take a pair of needle nose pliers and pull straight out on the tabs. its just a piece of tin bent in the shape of a u that pushes in to the locking portion of the nut to hold it.
My truck is a F-Superduty which is the first version of the F-450 and they have a Dana 80 that runs 10 bolt 16" wheels.
As for the lock washer with the tabs you should replace it with a new one regardless I learned the hard way now I won't pull the hubs on the old style Dana's without the new washer. What you do is bend the one tab back that goes over the outer nut then spin the nut off. Pull the locking washer out you will notice it keys into the keyway on the axle tube. That little tab that slips in the key way usually fails and causes the nuts to back off.
You should have the axle nut socket to take the nuts off and on don't use a cold chisel like some people do. That drives me nuts when I see someone chews the crap out of the adjusting and locking nuts with a chisel because they didn't use the proper socket. You should also pick up a new wheel seal for the back of the hub because its one of those things you do while its apart. Its a real pizz off when you get all the drums back together and the wheel seal starts leaking and soaks your brake shoes.
I don't have much experience with the Dana 61 I was told it was only really used in Vans.
The dana 61 was used in trucks and vans (mainly trucks) in order to get a gear faster than 3.50's, but if i remember right they came with 3.50's something as well.
