I finally broke down after reading how great Excursions are and got a 2001 7.3L 4WD Diesel Excursion with 55,000 miles (all stock with original suspension parts). It's in nice condition and I like it but driving it home 300 miles I noticed I needed constant steering inputs to keep it centered. It was really bad compared to my previous GMC Yukon.
Well, I spent a couple of hours searching this site and there seems to be lots of issues here with lots of potential fixes....
Toe in on Alignment/Radius Rods/Hellwig/shocks/steering freeplay adjustment/ball joints/tires/etc...
Well, as you'd understand just blindly doing everything above would be cost prohibitive.
So how would I go about where to start? I don't really have any mechanical experience so I would have to use a shop to do the work.
If you bring it to a reliable shop it is easy to detect if ball joints are bad. The truck needs to go up in the air to truely detect problem. But the good news is the problem can be fixed
