For a while now I have been wondering why one door lock **** was higher than the other. I realized today that the little black **** on the pass. side wasn't screwed down all the way. My question is, are they supposed to be screwed on all the way or not? Because when they are screwed down all the way very little sticks up when the doors are "open" and when they are locked the little **** goes down inside. If someone could point me in the right direction that would be great. Thanks.
It doesn't really matter. However you like it. It pretty much depends on if you have (functional) power locks or not. I do, so I never have to touch the ***** at all. I know some people who remove them entirely, and the riser rod as well, as an anti theft feature. You can't open the doors with a coat hanger like that, but you can still use the key to lock and unlock or use the power locks. Considering that my power locks work and are both new, I could do that, remove the rods and ***** entirely. I am not going to, but you get the point.
So put them wherever you want to if your power locks work. If they don't, or you do not have power locks, adjust them to the minimum height where you can get a grip on them but not so low that they can get below the rim and jam. Even without power locks, you could theoretically remove the rods and ***** too; you could lock/unlock from the outside with the key, but you would not be able to lock them from inside the vehicle.
Dang, I never knew that someone could say that many words about door lock *****. But there you have it. I doubt that there is anything left to say about the subject.
The idea being that when the doors are unlocked you can readily SEE that they are unlocked. Safety measure of sorts. And if for some reason your power lock fails to LOCK you can still reach up and slap the button down. The door will always come unlocked when you pull the interior handle. As was mentioned, its really a matter of personal taste. You could always replace them with the silly little dice-shaped ones too!
The locks should pop up when the door is opened from the inside so it shouldn't matter how much is sticking up. They do on my '92 anyway.
If they are too short then they can get below the rim and then sort of fall over to one side, and they hit the underside of the top of the panel and get stuck there when you try to unlock. Not a big deal, but who wants to keep sticking something in there to move it over everytime.
Question: How many Bronco drivers does it take to screw on a door lock ****?
1 guy to tell you everything you are doing wrong and 1 guy to tell you everything you are doing right, 1 guy to hold the beer bottle and 1 guy to do the work= 4, atleast that's how it is in my garage....
