I'm looking for innovative ideas anyones done to keep your trucks from getting broken into or stolen. I'm nearing the end of my 72's restoration and I've transformed it from a truck no one would want to something that will tempt the thoughts of an auto theif. I want to go beyond ideas like "The Club" or an alarm. I'm looking for ideas like a hidden fuel shut off, electrical bypass, or some other kind of hidden gimmic. Any ideas that you can pass on? Oh, and before anyone tosses this one out......Smith and Wesson has already been recommended....
Hydraulic 4 wheel brake lock. There should be a hole by your gas pedal where it will fit nicely. Make a 3/16 or 1/4 block steel cube around it and drill a hole for the key, but, not large enough to expose the whole lock. Then use high grade carriage bolts to bolt it to the firewall through to the engine compartment. Bolt it down and then tack weld the bolts.
When you want to leave your engibe running, a club and this will pretty much guarantee the truck is staying where it is unless
1) they have a flatbed or side lift tow truck
2) they cut the brake lines, front and rear and depend on the parking brake to stop them.
They have battery shut off switches that can be mounted under the hood and you need a key to turn power on.
A friend of mine had a security feature on his S-10. He had to pull the headlight switch out to start the truck. You can do the same with another switch such as wipers or high beams, where that switch has to be activated to start your truck.
My brother always wanted to figura out a way to wire a 10,000 volt capacitor to the body....so that once charged, anyone ytouching the car would get a BIG surprise. As far asa I know, he's still working on that one.....I use Hunter S' method and drive beaters with great drivetrains and interiors.
I'm in the same situation. I'd like to rig up some kind of cable release for the hood but not sure how to go about that either since the latch is on the hood rather than on the radiator mount. Don't want my expensive battery getting stollen.
So I have done this which is a pain in the A$$ but it works and the harder the better. So I have a Battery Shut off, I have a rewired the netual switch to a toggle so when its in park its actually saying its in gear. I have a switch on my electrical Fuel pump, I have MSD 6a so I have a switch on that also. I lock the hood. Then I have a Pitbull tirelock.com on my wheel. Its a pain, It won't stop a flat bed or someone breaking in, I do it to all my Classic cars and the truck and feel comfortable sitting in a resturant on Saturday evening with one parked outside.
P.S. Yes I have forgot to turn the fuel pump back on and died in the street, Sucks!
unhook the wire that goes from the ing to the starter, and hook it up to a push button switch and place it under the dash. So when some one goes to start the vehical they cannot because the wire is missing from the starter switch and is hid with the button that engages the starter. But you still have to use a key to turn on the power and shut off the motor.
well if you did an aftermarket steering wheel grant makes a quick removal system that locks a cap in place of the wheel. can be a pain at restraunts but at home or work it works great no wheel no drive also any kind of hidden cut out swith for ign. or batery works rather well i personally still use the old beat up truck idea, for now.
I think someone told me the the 78 or 79 trucks had an option for an internal hood latch. Not sure if he was joshing me of not tho. Also a have seen a focus gotten broken into. They broke the grill off cut and pulled the wire release to open the hood. Stole the short ram air intake and MAF Sensor. Than they broke the drivers window and emptied the car. Some thieves are just looking for a grab and go or just to do damage.
I wanna laugh at the thief that wants to steal a post style sterio. Not worth the resail and not worth the time and effort in removing it.
As far as theft goes I am more worried about loosing a couple grand in redoing interior than I am loosing the truck. I would still be pissed if I lost the truck but destroying the interior and leaving it, in some cases would be worst.
I also thought about the 10,000 volt thing but once used you sould be able to touch it no problem because the capasitor would be empty but that theif probably wouldn't be back. And your truck would smoke in the rain
As for togel switches. They are good and all when hidden but if you bombing around town doing all sorts of arrands(sp) your gonna get sick of flipping it and that one time you go into the store for 5 minutes is when its gonna happen. I can't remember but I think I put a togel switch on one of my cars because a wire burnt up and I had to replace it. Well the switch worked great for the first week and after that it stayed on and I might as well not have even put it in.
