If I had tires on my truck that I felt not safe at 100 plus mph they wouldn't be on my rims. When it's you life and others, tire and brake safety is paramount. Old rags (recaps) belong on a ranch truck with speeds under 25 mph in the dirt.

I agree with the first part. The deceleration lets vacuum pull oil under the piston, cooling the rings. Then another hard pull will expand the rings and make them hot again. Doing that over 5-6 times will break an engine in 99%.

However, I cant agree with doing this in 1st gear, using a higher gear will let the engine work longer on each pull, and seat the rings much faster.

I agree with you on that one heck I cant get one of my turcks above 5 mph in first. Then again I could hit 45 in first with one of my 3 speed trannies and 273 rear gears

Well, I was pretty new and frustrated at this at the time. The 'issue' was a 4.88:1 rear end. There is an excellent follow-on post started by myself in 2007 where a good answer to my problem (replacing with a lower gear ratio) was provided. Never meant to come across "harsh" to anyone.

Hey man it's 7 years later, I wouldn't fret over anything from that far back.

Secondly, there is NO way that a 292 with the original granny gear tranny can go 100. Not!

Eric

Uhh yes they can.........Final drive is 1 to 1 ratio "Granny" gear has zero to do with it. . I have had my old 61 with a clapped out 292 pegged lots of times. "this post is from the way back machine. ALA 1984.....LOL
