Power Steering fluid
I just did some easy checkups on my truck and noticed my power steering fluid was up to about 1/2 way in the fluid tank, is that normal? Also it smelled burnt and was black..what do you recommend I use and go about replacing it with and how? The steering is really damn loud when I turn...also I noticed the crankcase vent filter in my airbox is black and seperating from itself...chiltons says to replace every 20k miles, but that thing looks like its never been replaced, I never even looked at it before! Another thing I have a question about, how often should a K&N filter be cleaned? It looks kind of dingy and I have a filter cleaning kit ready...just dont know if I should do it yet, maybe 9k miles since I bought the K&N FIPK.

it would make sense to drain the fluid through the high pressure line, but i don't know if it would cause dammage to the pump, to do this simply unscrew the line from the steering gear box and start the truck up, but make sure you have a way of holding the line in the down position and a pan underneath *enviromentalists*

Pull off the low pressure return line, have some one ready with new fluid to add to the pump, jack the front end off the ground, start the engine and have your buddy pour in new fluid until it flushes the old junk out the low pressure hose, the new fluid will either be a bright red or clear depending on what you get, once you're sure you have all the old fluid flushed through the system, clamp your hose back and leave the top off the resevoir, move your steering wheel back and forth, stop to stop, until all the air is pumped out of the system (usually 15-20 times)
