1972 power steering question

I have a 1972 Ford Ranger with power steering. I had a lot of slop in the steering wheel and found that the rag joint/ steering coupler joint was shot. I replaced that and that took care of the slop but now it acts like the steering shaft is too tight or something. Their is a stiff spot and then it goes easy again. Any ideas gentlemen? I should say that some time ago, I tightened the steering gear box. Should I back this off a little now that I have the new rag joint in place? Thanks guys. Dan

Sounds like your too tight, the box is in the tight position when straight ahead. Back it off, use the rag joint to turn back and forth as you get a better feel than the steering wheel. Best done with the linkage or pitman arm removed from the box, adjusted until " just detectable" tight when straight ahead.

it worked!

Took your advice and it worked! Thanks a lot. One more little thing out of the way. Now I just need to scrape together my nickels for the body and paint. I've done all the mechanical now. Entire drive train is new or rebuilt, new 390, brakes, interior. Thanks again.

Make sure there is no side load on the rag joint from the cab mounts sacking out. Readjust the lower column plate and strap on the firewall if needed then retighten.
