i am considering either buying a higher mileage psd and replacing the engine or buying around a 130k mile one and keeping the engine. i just want to know, what is the cost for a new engine. it will be awhile before i can buy anything(need to be able to drive first), but this has been bugging me for a awhile. the most i would be able to spend altogether for truck and engine would be around $5K, and at MOST, $6K. which would be the better route? i would just buy a lower mileage used truck, but i will be a poor college student just a couple years after i buy it, and i don't need any problems. i am not worried about the engine itself, but i am worried about if the previous owner abused it, didn't change fluids often enough, etc. it's the risk you take anytime you buy a used vehicle and don't know the owner pretty well. i would prefer to just replace the engine, but i need to know the cost of a new engine.
Brand new? try 9-10 grand... Even used, they still turn around 3-4 grand depending on milage. I'd try for the truck with a 100K mile motor insted of trying to swap one, especially with the money you're talking about. But, even then, you still may be tight on budget.
Unfortunately for the money you have to spend you will most likely not be able to get a PSD, a mid to late 80's IDI yes. I just totaled my 96PSD with 280,000mi. and the Ins. Co. settled with me for $12k. I can't imagine a 94.5 PSD going for less then $10k. Good luck on truck hunting and school.
yeah, but what you got to understand is that used ford diesels (both psd's and idi's) are alot more common and ALOT cheaper around here in oklahoma and texas than where most of you live. it's not uncommon to see a 94.5-97 PSD with less than 150k miles for about $5k. i can find idi's dirt cheap. but i would rather have a PSD. ALOT.
example: i was looking in a Truck Trader earlier, and found a 96 f-250 s/c l/b 4x4 PSD auto with 160k miles for $3995. this is just one out of many i could name.
i really wanted to just find out the price of a new psd engine to see which would be the cheaper route. i won't be taking any action for at least a couple of years, but i wanted to find out.
The cheapest I've seen rebuilt PSD's is around $4,500-$6,000. I think you would be better off just getting a good truck...and rebuild the engine in it if you need to, though it shouldn't be neccessary if it has less than 200K on it and has been maintained.
like cookie said you can go through the motor for $4-6K. better off finding one that has a decent motor in it already. you can get alot more than 200k out of it. ive got a 94.5 with 595k on it. hoping to hit 600k before i yank the motor but dont wanna risk throwing a rod. on the older motors things like injector orings ipr, orings, injectors, hpop pump, can really make them come back alive. the bottom ends are pretty tough and long lasting.
rebuil psd at murrays discount auto was about $6500 i think and its a ready to drop in motor turbo and all.Its a Arrons motor has a 3 year 100,000 miles warranty.Matter of fact when they come in they still have fuel in them from them test running them.
i know a properly maintained psd can easily reach 500k, but its the issue of whether the previous owner maintained it. thanks for all the info, i figured from the beginning that a rebuilt psd would be expensive. when i buy one i will probably just find one with lower miles and hope it was well maintained, but if it starts having problems, i will always have this forum to help me out! thanks again.
Just throwing this in, Im currently rebuilding a 97 psd I checked every parts supplier I know including Ford, clevite, all aftermarket parts and International was the cheapest. With a kit for $1400.00. So doing the wrenching my self plus machine work and extras I figure I will have right at $2000.00 In It. Just something to think about and give you a Idea how expencive these parts are.
I've seen PSDs with very high mileage in excellent running condition. At the least, you could buy a higher mileage truck and drive it for quite a long time. For example, you could find a truck with 160K on it that was not abused. If it was properly maintained and maintenanced, it should last a lot longer provided you take care of it and keep up to date with fluid changes, filter changes etc. Good luck. Hope you find yourself a PSD!
