I am trying to pull the codes off my 95 PSD. Talked to the parts store guy and he said the off the shelf scanners don't work on diesels. Sounds fishy to me. Another thing is I am not sure if I need an OBD I or OBD II scanner. The scanners say 96 and later are OBD II. My chiltons book says Ford 95 diesels are OBD II. Stores won't let you return a scanner so before I buy one I would like to know if any has used a commercial scanner on a 95 PSD and if it worked and what kind it was - brand and OBD I or II.
advanced or autozone will check them for free if you tell them your check engine light is on. i took my '95 in to autozone (i think, can't keep the 2 apart) and they scanned it no prob.
if your vehicle is over 8400 gvwr the scanner at autozone will not work. It will read fine and says everything passes when you could have trouble codes. I called actron who is the maker of the scanner autozone uses and got this info from there tech.
I called my local auto zone and they said they could check a 7.3 PSD, but if the check engine light WAS NOT ON, it would not show any codes.
I also tried to purchase a scanner from Checker and Auto Zone, but after questioning if it worked on diesels, they crawfished and said they did not know.
I insisted that they find out since the code reader said "all vehicles after 1996" cars and "light trucks". I got the Checker guy to call Acutron and the rep told Checker that diesels were NOT considered "light" trucks and therefore the labeling was correct.
I think the lable "all" and "light truck" covers diesels and pointed out that light trucks has historically referred to 1 ton and smaller.
Jamie at actron said the actron will not work correctly on vehicles with more than 8400 GVWR. Anything above that they consider it be heavy duty. After the actron said everything passes on mine (cel on) I took it to a friend who works at a shop with a snap on scanner he pulled 3 codes.
