I'm not trying to sell anything. I'm just looking for a simple yes or no answer to whether the factory fuel mileage computer/calculator is accurate. I figure it should know how much fuel it's pumping (maybe it doesn't) and it better know how many miles it travels, otherwise a manual calculation is worthless. So...is this too boring a question to answer, is the answer in a another section or are you chaps stumped?
Sorry for the sarcastic answer. This has been discussed on here a few times. The "Lie-O-Meter" as it is so affectionately called is usually high. The only way to verify it is to bounce it against a manaul calculation.
I think every truck is different and you have to do a hand calculation and compare it to the computer over several tanks of fuel. My 05 is more accurate than my 04 was . It is a completely different computer so maybe they improved them. The 05 reads about 0.5 mpg higher than I get and the 04 read about 1 mpg higher than I got. Wrenchtraveller.
I think it will vary depending on how long it has been since it has been reset. I haven't reset mine. I could hot dog it for a tank and get say 13 mpg for the tank. The computer starts out at 19.5 for the 7,000 previous miles. It will show a decrease but I doubt if it would go down to around 14. If you reset it every tank it would probably be closer but I think it would still vary.
I think the miles to empty is a truer indication of the fuel used, or remaining, however you want to look at it.
The computer in my '05 is dead on to the 10th (If it says 9.8MPG that's what I calculate as well). Every time I fill up, I reset the MPG counter. It has been perfectly accurate since I started checking - last 5 tanks.
how do u reset the indicator? i jsut got my psd and still learning the ropes. mine is stuck on 15.2. been like this since i have on it. i have a thread on this asking a question if my is broken are not................thanks dawg
To reset - all I do is push and hold the reset button (far right button) while the MPG display is up. In a second or two it resets to zero. I then cycle to the miles traveled and press the reset button again.
When you first reset the meter you can tell how you drive the truck reflects usage. Over 10k on my 05 and It's usually 1-1.5mpg off from hand calculation. I think it's due to the truck only lowers the lie o meter as you drive. So if you have 100 miles on your truck all Hwy and then you drive 30minutes in stop and go, it's not going to drop all at once but gradually.
