91 Exp 4.0 temp gauge question

Does anyone have a detailed schematic on the dash temp gauge wiring for a 91 Explorer? Mine is in the shop having a rebuilt engine installed and the gauge is pegging extreem low reading (below scale). Mechanic is stumped, but I think they may have pinched the lead to ground somewhere on the engine wiring harness. Unfortunately, my Haynes manual falls short in this area.

Any Ideas, this issue is all that is stopping me from getting the truck back.
Thanks:
Dialtone.

I don't have a better schematic than Haynes, but I'll offer the following suggestions. I assume you've checked this, but if you unplug the wire from the temperature sensor it should go to one end (Cold I think) and if you touch it to ground it should go to the other end (hot I think). If the guage doesn't change, then the sensor is probably OK and the problem is in the wiring or the guage. If it's pegged cold all the time could be a break in the wire. You can trace the wire back through the harness and check it in different spots. I'd start by checking it near by the end that plugs onto the sensor. Sometimes the constant flex and bind at the wire connection to the plug can cause a break.

Good Luck..............

Previous post is correct... if you ground the sending unit wire, the gauge should peg to hot. If not, there is either a problem with the wiring or the gauge. Could also be an open thermostat problem, if the temp flucuates somewhat. The guy doing the motor should know all of this.
