Plastic vacuum lines

My '85 302 w/carb has some colored plastic vac lines. Over the years it seems like every mech I use has his own theories as to which lines go where and which are even needed. I am trying to re-route as per the diagram on the front of the eng comp, but those plastic lines break if I look at them too hard. Someone told me to just replace them with regular rubber vac hose, but it seems the diameter is larger on the rubber hose. Will that work, or is the small hose small for some reason? Help, and thanks

Rubber hoses will work. You may need to get some adaptors and several different size vacuum hoses to make things go together. I replaced hoses as they broke on my trucks. I demand a lot out of my trucks, and since they are used daily, when things break I just repair what is needed to get them going again. The plastic lines do get brittle after time and trying to doctor them up after a while just gets futile. Good luck.

I replaced all of mine a few weeks ago. I was able to get the same diameter of rubber hose as the rubber on each end of the plastic lines. Only problem now is knowing which is which since they're not color coded anymore.

Buy some colored electrical tape. Red, green, and blue should do ya. Then just wrap the rubber hose every so many inches. This way you'll know which one goes where. That's what I did to my rubber lines. Just an idea..

I get dragged out kicking and screaming every time I go with my wife. I just love that place! another thing you can use is a paint pen that you can get in many colours They are like a majic marker but use paint instead. Get them at welding supply shops.
