Cold Air Intake Test
First I took temp readings with the box insulated and fairly well sealed off from heat. Temp differential between intake air and ambient was 1 degree at 55mph, and 5-10 degrees when sitting still. TD (Temperature Differential) between intake and engine compartment temp was 22-35 degrees at 55 mph, and 10-18 degrees sitting still.
Second I tested the K&N FIPK setup with no modifications. TD between intake air and ambient was 2-3 degrees at 55 mph and 15-20 degrees sitting still. TD between intake and engine compartment was 18-26 degrees at 55 mph, and 0-8 degrees sitting still.
Last, I removed the cold air close-off completely and used the 6637 filter with the stock air intake snorkel left intact. TD between intake air and ambient was 10-20 degrees at 55 mph and 20 to 30 degrees sitting still. TD between intake and engine compartment was 0 degrees at 55 and sitting still.
So, if my tests are somewhat accurate a well closed off cold air intake will allow the engine to breath a constant 10- 34 degrees cooler air. I don't know how that relates to HP or EGT's, but it couldn't hurt. Temp readings taken with a Fluke electronic thermometer and average ambient temp was 65 degrees. The sitting still temps were based on a one minute stop. I have pictures in my gallery of the insulated test close-off and temp probe locations. Just thought some of you may be interested. I am trying to design a better cold air setup for each variation of the PSD. If it is successful, I'll post pics if anyone wants to make one, or I may have the shop fabricate some.
