I'm looking into purchasing a new truck soon, considering ford is starting to put the '05s on sale at the dealerships here. My ideal configuration would be a 2wd XLT regular cab long bed but apparently they do not make ANY trucks like this and it needs to be ordered. My options on the lot are an XL Regular Cab Longbed and an XLT Supercab longbed. Both have the 5.4L and have 2WD. What would be the gas mileage difference in these trucks? Also, I'm having trouble deciding whether power windows and some chrome are worth the extra 6000+ dollars for the XLT. I can probably bargain the regular cab down to under 20000 which is really cool because i am just a poor college kid.
Another question, some XLs i run into have no chrome, small headlights and the painted wheels, while others have XLT-style headlights and XLT chrome wheels. Any reason for the difference, as they are the same price. I would be inclined to go for the one with chrome wheels. Furthermore, the XLs have the TowCommand system. I test drove the truck and felt that the brakes grabbed harder than normal. Is this the result of the TowCommand or do they just need to be adjusted. BTW, power on the 5.4 was very nice! Thanks for your help guys!
I have the truck you are looking at getting except mine is a diesel. I live in a large metro area. I had to get my truck in another state. I got a xlt with allot of nice options on it. I have to say it's worth the extra to get some options. My truck was ordered with the retired guy pulling a 5th wheeler in mind that's what the dealer told me and I as happy with that. My truck stickered for 38,315. I got it for 33,100. My truck is a 04. I think they did a good job with the options.
If you're "just a college kid" looking for a truck, keep it simple. Two schools of thought here: 1. you don't need to spend the extra money for luxuries and creature comforts; and 2. you can always upgrade things on the XL truck once you can afford it. For now, just get a vehicle to "get by" with. My thoughts here: You may not want a truck (or that particular truck)once you finish school; you can keep it as a workhorse and get a second vehicle after graduation; or, you can trade up for it once you graduate and have some more money behind you.
Are you going to school in SJ? What college? If you're going to be driving in the city of SJ a lot, that long bed is going to get old... Fast! Pain to park and maneuver. Get the short bed unless you absolutely, positively have to have the long bed for ??? reason.
Yeah, I'll be driving it in San Jose. I tend to agree with everything you said, but the handling on these 2005s thanks to the coil springs is amazing compared to my 1990. In comparison the new 250 turns on a dime whereas in the same situation I would have had to reverse - forward a couple times with my current truck. As far as the XL versus XLT, i tend to agree with you. I can throw in a Cd player and speakers for 300 bucks so thats just about all I need. I'm going to West Valley right now, hope to transfer to SJSU soon. Thanks for your help!
PS: I need the long bed so I can fit two pallets in back if I need to!
I have had all three of the cabs and I will never own anything but a crew cab. But when I went from a single cab to a super cab I was amazed at how I ever lived without it before. The supercab long bed is the same wheel base as my truck and I never have problems parking it. There is nothing wrong with the XL package, I have had a few myself. When I get the time and extra money I am gonna remove my seats and tear out the carpet and have my friend that owns a truck accessorie shop spray the floor board. I hate carpet, the mud and dirt is a real pain to clean.
