I was behind a VW Golf today, it was covered with "vegetable oil for fuel" type of stickers in the back window. Its true what they say, these vehicles really smell like french fries! There are several vehicles in my area that use this type of fuel. Maybe it will be the future for the next generation.
I was keeping track of a site called greasecar a few years ago. If I remember right some college was expermenting with a VW diesel engine stuck in a bus, (as I recall). They had problems, but kept it going as they drove it around. I sorta lost interest, but it was pretty interesting.
We have an Alternative Fuels forum here now, bio-diesel is certainly one of those! You might scroll down and check it out there. My understanding is that it's made from new or used and filtered vegetable oil, methanol, and a little lye. Supposedly it can be burned in an unmodified diesel. You can also burn straight vegetable oil, but I believe it has to be pre-heated and kept warm on its way to the engine, and the engine still has to be started and shut down on dino-diesel. I'm finding myself interested in this as well, as I'm possibly going to be getting a diesel soon. -TD
The local restaraunt chain I work for donates our used fryer oil to the local cab company that is running mercedes diesels in their cabs. They do have to have two tanks and start them using diesel, and then once the vegetable oil is warm enough, they can switch over and run it pure. It does have to be filtered very well and smells like french fies, but definately worth it.
Thats where I get all mine, local pubs, resturants, and grills. It is a little bit of a project to convert a PSD to WVO, but i think the price of diesel being $2.20 a gallon will more then offset the price of the conversion.
Look up the name Fordnut74, I think its 74, might just have to try fordnut. He has done a bunch of work on his truck and a few others and is pretty smart when it comes to Vegi conversions.
