i am building a 400 for my truck and the heads should be back in about a week my question is this i am looking for a set of rocker i am going to use just the stock pedestal mount type am looking at the ones from comp cams the high energy ones that just look like stock rocker arms but on ebay i found a set of roller tip rocker arms that are the pedestal mount for alot cheeper but the ratio of the rocker arm is different will this hurt anything and i was wondering if any body is running these also when i was taking off the stock rocker arms there were thin metel pieces just under the bolt that holdes the rocker i am not sure how to explain that piece but what is it and is it needed when i put my heads back together. thank you for all of your help
there were thin metel pieces just under the bolt that holdes the rocker ...
those are shims and i believe you have to have the correct ratio...
i believe it would be 1.73 but double check
i just ordered scorpion roller rockers for my 351m
check this out on ebay
Scorpion roller rockers 351C 400 429 460 Ford pedestal Item number: 7914879405
I'm using the Scorpions and they are the way to go if you want a roller and don't want all the head mod head aches. The shims under the pedestal are to get the proper preload on the lifter. There are threads on here and an article in the Crane tech section explaining how to do that.
I believe the comp cams roller tip rockers you are refering to are a 1.72 ratio instead of stock 1.73. You may reduce your valve lift a smidge, but you won't notice any performance loss. You may or maynot need those shims again or you may need additional shims to set the proper lifter preload after you block and heads have been milled. It's kind of trial and error.
I believe the "thin metal pieces" you are refering to is the oil deflector. This piece allows the oil that comes out of the pushrod to spray onto the rockers and valve springs. If you go back with a stock or stock type setup you will need these. When rebuilding mine the rockers I purchased had a tab on the top lip of the rocker that eliminated the deflector. Good luck with your build.
