I just picked up a leer cap for my 86F-250 for $20. The paint appears to have faded, but so has the paint on my truck...
The only problem with this cap is that someone has broken out two windows. The window at the front of the cap has a panel busted out and one of the side windows is also broken.
I am planning on using plexi-glass to fix both, but I am wondering what the best method of cutting the plexiglass is, as well as looking for any pointers from someone who has done this before. The plexiglass will be about 1/8" thick.
Not sure if it's the best method, but I have used a saber saw before. Just make sure you put tape on the guide plate and the plexiglas to keep from scratching it. That also gives you some place to mark the plexiglass for cutting without having to scribe it. Use a slow speed. If you go too fast, it will melt and seal back up behind you.
Are you sure 1/8" is thick enough. I could have sworn that caps I had in the past with plexiglass windows were at least 3/16. May be wrong, but that was my impression.
Plexiglass is a brittle plastic as such you have to be careful of chiping and shattering the plastic as you cut it. They make plexiglass cutters that have a very sharp point that is dragged along the cut line putting a groove into the plastic it can then be snaped along this line. if you saw it you could make it yourself they are not expensive. rough cut the curves in and then sand them to the desired shape. sanders work very nicely on plexiglass just remember the plastic does get hot.
I've used freckleface.com, they are also advertised here. Personally I'd use Polycarbonate, in a grey/black tint. (Its more sunlight resistant not to mention stronger) Best thing to cut corners with is a hand coping saw with a brand new blade.
