Question Driveshaft/U-joint check

I was under the truck recently checking my u-joints, or trying to. The u-joints all seem tight. I noticed no lateral movement at either joint.
I did notice that where the yoke slides into the tranny extension (2WD), that I can push the drive shaft up and down and side to side. The movement I'm seeing is within the tranny, not at the joint itself. Should there be movement? Does this indicate a worn yoke? Can this cause vibration at highway speeds?

Thanks,
Rich

Unless the trans. rear seal is leaking, I wouldn't think the play is excessive. When pressure is applied to the rear wheels, it tends to lock the yoke to the tailpiece and it shouldn't vibrate.

Are you having vibration issues?

Yeah. I just had all new ball joints installed and an alignment. I still have vibration coming from somewhere. I suspected tires because a couple of the tires are worn funny, presumably from the ball joints being bad. Actually they are all worn funny, but two are considerably worse than the other two. Anyway, I've had the tires balanced twice recently and had the alignment checked again. Still vibrating. I guess it still could be the tires, but I'm not sure.

The best I can describe it is, I hear a helicopter or even a flat tire. However the steering wheel doesn't feel like it is vibrating. It seems like I feel it mostly in the seat, gas pedal.

I asked about the yoke because it seemed like a lot of movement laterally. Probably somewhere between 1/8 and 1/4" total movement. Maybe u-joints? Exactly what does one look for when checking them? Nothing seemed sloppy at the joints themselves, just where the yoke slips in the tranny extension. I do have some chatter when taking off. I guess that's either u-joints or clutch. Can you get highway speed vibration from u-joints, yoke, flywheel/clutch componets?

Thanks,

Rich
