hey everyone well lately my truck has been acting funnny on start up. it used to be my truck would start up pretty much right when you turned the key but lately it needs at least like 5 or 6 cranks for it to fire up. so i need like new spark plugs or something? i have alot of things that can drain my battery like 2000 watts of amp, interior neons and all kinds of things like that would those affect start up any? its kinda got me bummed out but if i just need new spark plugs that would be cool. it's a 1999 4.2 f-150 i got it about 6 months ago and i dont know about any of its past service history. thanks any comments would be appreciated
First thing I'd check with all that stuff sucking juice: no load battery voltage.
That is to say: check the battery volatge with a volt meter before you try to start the truck.
Anything staying on while the truck is not running?
It's possible your alternator might be having a hard time making up for all the current load. Short drives might not keep the battery fully charged.
If you have a battery charger, try charging the battery for an hour or two before you try to start the truck. That should give you a good idea if it's the battery.
You don't have an underdrive pulley do you?
You should see 12.7V with no load.
About 14.7V with it running.
One other thing to try: turn the key on but don't try to start the engine, then turn the key off. Do this 2 or 3 times and then try to start it.
If it fires right up, then I'd suspect a fuel pump (or related) problem.
