Since there are a couple of threads going on brakes I thought I' d ask. I have a volare front-end and Granada rear in my truck, and a remote fill m/c from a Mitsubishi (7/8" bore) that will fit into the original location quite well. Will this master cylinder work alright with this set-up or should I go with a firewall mount volare m/c ?
The big issue will be the size of the resevoir. Big disk brakes require a lot of fluid, put a large enough res on it. With that size MC it should be like power brakes if you don't run out of pedal travel first.
It is a power brake set-up. Has about an 8'' booster, a bigger reservoir should be no problem. I'll be using the stock pedals so hopefully there will be enough travel. I guess I'll just have to try it and see.
MC and booster also needs to have enough travel to actuate the brakes fully. Smaller piston diameter MC=less pedal effort but more travel to move the same volume of fluid. The calipers require a certain volume and pressure to activate fully. Doesn't require much change in diameter for significant difference in displacement (displacement = 3.14 x radius x radius x stroke) hope it doesn't turn out to be too sensitive for you.
IIRC Most american cars use a 1" cylinder for manual brakes and a 1-1/8 to 1-1/4" cylinder for power brakes.
It sounds like the safe bet will be to go with the Volare m/c and booster. I had the other m/c and just wanted to see if there was a possibility of using it. Thanks for the info.
The booster on it is huge. I have already done most of the work on the hanging pedals in order to put it on the firewall anyway. I also have a GM setup but it is very long. I'm mainly trying to figure out what will work for the least amount of money.
Most power MC use a universal mount pattern, so you just need to find a smaller diameter booster. I had gotten a good used Camaro aluminum MC and 9" booster for 25.00 each before I bought a brand new 7" Dual diaphram polished stainless booster for 125.00 that I used instead. I am also using a hydraulic clutch so I put in all hanging pedals (even the emergency brake and throttle).

I went with the Volare MC and booster on the firewall on my 48 F-3. It fits there nice. I have done my last under the floor brake system. They are more trouble than they are worth...
