hesitation on acceleration

Can't seem to figure the reason I'm getting hesitation when accelerating, and why it takes a while for engine to return to idle after letting off gas when revved in park.
Put Edelbrock 2182 Power Package w/7811 timing set on an '86 351W (in '86 E-250 Superduty). Timed it to 10 degrees BTC (timing set installed straight up). Have steady 22 HG vacuum at 2200 rpm, as per the instructions included with vacuum guage for testing vacuum on running engine. Changed all gaskets, vacuum lines, fuel line from pump forward to carb., plus filter. Checked linkages from pedal to carb. Replaced return springs on carb. Carb., Edelbrock 1406, was new in October. New MSD 6A ignition, Accel super coil, new Bosch 8mm plug wires. Spark plugs, new in October, look perfect, according to the Haynes photos. No emission controls or fittings, no A/C or fittings, headers to dual exhaust. Basically just a no frills straight engine in the engine compartment.
Dizzy, waterpump, harmonic, fuel pump, battery, alternator, oil pump and screen, 180 degree thermostat, all pretty new. Tranny rebuilt about 2 years ago or so. Changed diff. fluid to synthetic less than 6 months ago.
Thanks for any thoughts, help

I have that same carb on my 302 and was experiencing a hesitation. I was blaming the carb but found that I needed to advance the timing a little. Then the hesitation went away.

I was thinking of doing that next time I fill-up. Gotta use premium grade, right? (got regular in the tank, now).
Thanks, Munrow
