Valvetrain Q's

Got my Aussie heads a couple of weeks ago, and my SS valves are on the way- but I need to know if there is any reason that I shouldnt use the stock valve spring retainers?? The valves should be single groove stems, are there keepers available for the single groove valves that are compatible with the stock retainers???? Also, do the 335 series engines require anything in the way of specialized rocker arm studs or will the garden variety 7/16 ones that are listed for chevys in my speed shop catalogs work ok???

the stock multigroove keepers form a complete circle inside the spring retainer so the valve actually floats in the keepers and can spin easily. single groove keepers do not touch each other and hold everything snug in position. all you can do is try some stock style single groove keepers and see how they assemble, my guess is that they should work but make sure you have the correct angle keepers for the retainers. for the studs it depends on if they have a shoulder on them or not. if you are putting together an adjustable rocker set-up you'll want studs with no shoulder, and of the correct diameter for the stud hole in your rockers. you'll need polylocks, guide plates and hardened pushrods too. the Crane stud conversion kit has nylon guides and doesn't need hardened pushrods.

Yes they make valve locks that will work with a single groove valve and a stock "multi groove" retainer. If you are using a single spring, then the original retainers would work with the correct locks. If you are using a double spring, you will need a new retainer anyway.

The rocker arm studs will depend on if the heads have been machined down or not.

Already have the roller rockers, polylocks, guideplates, and hardened pushrods gathered up, just need the valves, springs, studs and retainer hardware to take heads into the machine shop. I was under the impression that all 335 engines were multi-groove keeper equipped, not a big issue as new retainers and keepers are pretty reasonably priced.
