Well, it could be a number of things, this system can't be 'jumped' easily, check the harness between the TFI module on the distributor and the coil for any breaks in the wiring, check the connectors for corrosion as well. Hot start could be a TFI module, or it could be the pickup coil inside the distributor, check it for resistance, should have a couple ohms if its in good shape.

Trying to recall the operation, on power up the tfi cycles, latching the fuel pump on for 4 seconds or something, then the fuel pump shuts off until it sees a spark signal, so, key on, listen for the fuel pump to cycle, crank the engine and see if you hear the fuel pump cycle again, it might point out a faulty pickup coil.

Hmm, do you have a multimeter available, even a $20 auto ranging one from radio shack could save some headaches. your coil looks like a little brick right? you'll need to check resistance values between the two low voltage terminals in the plug and between each spade terminal and the high voltage contact. If you need the numbers, I have the book around someplace. The pickup coil is down in the bottom of the distributor, under the rotor, little small dice sized thing that has the wires running to it from the distributor plug.
