Smile 2005 F150 Towing Performance

I've got a 2000 F150 SCAB and with a 3.55 rear end / 5.4 lt. . We recently purchased an Adirondack Travel Trailer 31 ft. / 6300 lb. unloaded weight. My truck pulls it fine but on extended hills I'm shifting down and slowing down about 10 mph. We're looking to upgrade and we were looking at the F250 diesel although the salesman seems to think we'd be okay with the new 2005 F150 as the trailer towing capacity has bumped up to 9200 lbs in the new 05 150 screw.

Any comments or suggestions would be extremely helpful!!

No doubt, the F-150 with the 5.4 and the heavy GVW package will pull the trailer (as long as it's not loaded down too much), but the F-250 with a diesel will outpull it anytime. Decide what's more important to you... the better ride and lower cost of the F-150, or the assurance of an F-250 that's designed specifically for towing.

Well.....I guess I don't need replies to this anymore as today I broke down and traded in my good ole 2000 F150 for a 2003 Ford F250 and yeah....I got the diesel!! I appreciate the advice, I had several friends say that same thing as you. That little voice in the back of my head was also telling me no to take chances and go for the bigger safer truck with plenty of muscle to flex. Didn't want to fork out $43,000 for a new base 250 so I found a 2003 with only 20,000 and got the Lariat to boot with all the goodies......looks like the trucks been doing pretty good with gas mileage too....the computer in the headboard said that it was currently averaging 14 mpg while doing test drives.....I'm a happy camper!!! Quite Literally!!

New toy:
2003 Ford F250 FX4 Lariat SCREW with 6.0 Diesel
3.73 rearend
All the bells and whistles including dual heated leather seats, gas and brake pedal adustments, power everything. It's even got an aluminum retractable bed cover, and rhino lining. The truck is imaculate without a scratch or ding in an awesome white over gray paint scheme. Can't wait to hook it up to our 31ft. Adirondack and hit the highway!!

Thanks for the advice!!

Glad to hear you're happy with your decision. As much as I love my new F-150, if I did any towing and/or hauling on a regular basis, I would opt for a Super Duty. Too bad you couldn't afford a new '05 model, they're supposed to be one helluva truck! But the older models are also very capable, and your happiness is what really matters the most.

Happy trucking!
