i have a 1974 torino with the 302 in it..it still fires off points but im wanting the later electronic distributor,i have the distributor, coil and the module box off of an '82 model 302,what else do i need and how do i wire it in myself?? i dont want to have to pay to get it done,im a cheap skate!!
You can do this an easier way, just buy a Pertronix unit and install it in the dist you now have. Two wires to hook up, takes 30 minutes tops to install it. Add a hotter coil, good wires and your set to go.
Forget that '82 or whatever. It is probably TFI, the sudden death ignition that can lead to your sudden death. (stalls without warning, usually after you've pulled out in front of a cement truck or locomotive)
There are several replacement units, one mentioned before. What about Mallory "unilight" units? Are they still around.
Get rid of the points.
Then go after the compression ratio and cam and heads etc. Saw your other posts. Scroll down this series of threads, there are several including "Starsky and Hutch..." that give specifics on a nice 400 horse 351W build up if you want to terrorize anyone. Of course, a 300 horse 302 with 4.11's and a beefed low geared AOD would do the trick.
thank you for your input...this is going to be a fun project for me and im just looking for the best route to take and all of your replies are really going to help me out however if i install the AOD ive found then i hear i have to get a floor shifter...is that true or can i still use my column shifter? the AOD is out of an '83 mercury grand marquis.
If you install a floor shifter with that AOD, You will have problems. The shift lever on the transmission will have to be replaced with one from B&M that points down. I tried removing the factory one that points up and putting it back in facing down. I didn't get the full movement to shift into lower gears. Floor shift from the factory AOD's already have the lever facing down. There is no reason why you can't make it work on the column. The letters may not line up with what gear it's actually in however, unless you fabricate the correct length shift lever that hangs down on your steering column. It needs to be the same length as the lever on the AOD transmission. I like using a Duraspark factory Ford distributor, with an MSD 6 box. The MSD takes the place of the Ford ignition box, and gives you a much better ignition. Instructions for this are on their web site.

Funny, the C-4's are just the opposite. Floor shift cars, the link is above the pivot, column cars are below it. You'd think they'd be the same.
I still use the stock colum for my od! Overdrive is just past neutral and 1,2 and drive are in the usual spot. It works for now till i can afford a colum with an od pattern.
