Hi, this is my first post on this forum although I've been registered and reading the posts for a couple of months.
I'm looking to buy a 1990 or newer Bronco in the near future and I'm looking for suggestions on things that I need to look out for that are specific to Broncos.
I'm don't have a lot of experience with maintaining/repairing/tinkering with trucks (changing my own oil is about the most that I've done at the moment however I hope to change that in the future) so please keep that in mind when replying.
look out for fender, gutter/pillar and tailgate rust or cracks. I would also suggest getting a bronco with the 5.8L 351w and maybe a bronco with the tow package.
I just bought my bronco 4 months ago. It is a 89 and I paid 3600 for it. Look at my Gallory and you will see. Here is what to look for.
1. check in the air filter compartment for oil. If there is oil the engine needs to be rebuilt.
2. Check under the truck for oil leaks. Don't let this stop you from buying, but the more you can find wrong the lower you can get the price
3. Test drive it long enough to get the engine to normal operating tempeture. Perfomance can change one the engine warms up.
4. Test the 4 wheel drive in low and High. You can know that it is working by backing up slowely and start turning the wheel and the truck will become hard to move. Also when going forward in 4x4 punch the gas to make sure it will not pop out of gear.
5. Look the body over for rust. If you find rust I would not buy it, their are two many good deals out there. Make sure you inspect the truck in the day, with good light. You know how good a car can look at night.
i got a 87 bronco that i rebuilt the engine at school it had about 142k on it. i would check chassis and body for rust especially tailgate and rear fender/ quarter panels. make sure all electrical works that means tailgate window turn signal anything. let the truck warm up to operating temperature. let it idle for at least 5 min
These are many of the questions concerns etc. that this forum and others like it see on a regular basis. If you are in the market for one of these trucks, these are many of the most common trouble spots and queries made about them.
Look out for replacement parts under the car they are usually markedsticker with the ford logo on it I had bought my bronco about 5-6 months ago and just figured out it was in a crash because the bumper isnt lined up properlly nor is the left front fender although I just hit the 80k mark its still a good buy for 7500 but look out for the things I had just mentioned cause you could get it for cheaper I know I could have but I did look it over that good sadly
I purchased my 86 bronco sight unseen from a one owner in california, best 6000 I have ever spent and only had 62000 miles. Got all paper work and window sticker, but like the other guys say these do rust badly check doors, fenders, wheelwells, tailgate, hood and the join at the roof at the end of the ditch and make sure rear window works smoothly. Good luck
