I have a 2004 King Ranch with the 6.0 and 5 speed auto. The truck is stock with 11000 miles on it. I would like to do an exhaust upgrade and a chip. I occasionally tow my 8000lb boat, or my 2000lb atv trailer. I would like the truck to be faster and maybe pick up a few mpg. There are so many diesel upgrades I dont know which one is good.
For the exhaust, I would like to increase turbo whistle, and have a mellow rumble.
For the power upgrades, I would like something basic, and reliable. I dont want to get into exhaust temp problems or blowin tranny's.
So what do you recommend? Is there anywhere I could hear clips of a 6.0 aftermarket exhaust?
I live on a rural highway. There's three Fords that run down my way each evening. Two of them I like the sound of. One of these days I'm gonna sit at the driveway idling, waiting for them to cruise by. I'm gonna chase each of them down to get information about their exhaust and mods. I've heard an 02' 7.3 with a turbo back straight 4" pipe without cat or muffler. Nice! But I'm retaining the cat on my 6.0. I don't know of any of the diesel exhaust manufactures that have sound clips on their web sights. That's where I'd check.. Each exhaust manufacture's web sight. With any of them you'll get some more turbo whistle. More with an 03' than with an 04/05' since those have different turbos though. If you're only towing that small amount in the flats of Illinoise, I'd start with the exhaust and see if you want more power. No need to add other performance options if you don't change exhaust. That's the first step.
Cut out the muffler and get the new pipe welded in. I have some whistle now and I do like it.
Performance depends on your own research. So many will recommend this or that to use. I have been looking and have narrowed the field down to those that offer 30-day returns on their product. It should also adjust the tranny shifting for the new power. Quadzilla has a new module coming out soon, I'm waiting to see what is said before I send off for a SCT.
Having run the Edge with Attitude and the SCT, I will say the Edge is more powerful but at a cost of transmission failure (1 for me so far). I did run it like a scalded dog so I should expect breakage, but I dont have to like it! The SCT seems to be a nice set up. The tranny shifting is better, it eliminates the speed limiter and traction control if you request it during set up. I havent rebuilt my tranny yet and have been limping it around but decided to install the "economy" tune instead of stock with tranny tune. I will have to say I am impressed. Economy setting is a very reasonable tune that still provides enough acceleration and speed to depress gassers. When the tranny is repaired, I will try it in all settings and probably stack the edge and Sct together.
Your 04 will not have the turbo noise our 03's do. A cat back would be a great addition. The 03 down pipe was more restrictive so I have the turbo back MagnaFlow exhaust and this winter I was very surprised the rust it is showing. A good aluminized pipe would be fine.
The SCMT 1704 is showing good results for the transmission. Many tuners or fuel boxes are on the market and SC has done a good job at managing the transmission.
In addition to what the previous says.. the 05's have a completely different whistle as well. Mine is breathing thru an MBRP stainless dual system and is quite mellow, but deeper than bone stock.. Straight piped under load was more than I wanted to hear at this stage in my life.... I have an 02 Mustang w/ 2 chamber Flowmasters and catless bassani xpipe for extreme noise making fun runs.
